May 15--Dr. Charles W. Thomas found his calling when, as a surgical resident, he covered a friend's shift in the emergency room at Edgewater Hospital and went on to a long career in the often chaotic field of emergency care in Chicago.
Dr. Thomas, 56, died Thursday, May 10, after suffering a heart attack while on the job in the emergency room at Norwegian-American Hospital in Chicago, said his wife, Terri. His partner in Emergency Care Physician Services, Dr. Seth Guterman, led a rescue effort that proved futile.
