May 15--Susan Goldberg, executive editor of the Mercury News, has resigned to take the same position with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, ending eight years during which she helped guide San Jose's daily newspaper through a period of transition.
Goldberg, 47, will be replaced by Carole Leigh Hutton, a former publisher and editor of the Detroit Free Press who currently oversees a group of Bay Area community newspapers operated by California Newspapers Partnership. CNP, in turn, is controlled by MediaNews of Denver.
