NEW YORK -- Hair care, the oldest and largest segment of the ethnic health and beauty aids market, is maintaining slow but steady growth, with sales topping $400 million for the first time in 1993 and continuing to climb at a rate of approximately 3% yearly.

"The market is a bit flat now, due to the curl business still falling," says Mario De la Guardia, who is the brand manager for Carson Products Co., a leading supplier of ethnic hair care products.

De la Guardia claims that African-American consumers now prefer more relaxed, natural looks. "Curls are inconvenient, and take too much time to maintain," he says. ...
