LEOMINSTER - Overseeing more than half the city budget and selecting its highest paid employee are among the duties of the School Committee, the elected members of which spend most of their two-year terms setting policy for the district.
For their troubles they receive no compensation. But that may be about to change.
A resident, Mary T. Jean, has submitted a petition to the City Council seeking "a reasonable yearly stipend" for the School Committee. Before the council meeting Monday night, Ms. Jean said she hoped the stipend would help attract candidates for the elected positions.
