Jean Baudrillard, 77, influential philosopher and culture critic, died after a long illness at his home in Paris on Mar. 6. A prominent figure in French postmodern theory, Baudrillard is perhaps best known for his 1981 book Simulacra and Simulation, in which he observed a shift in contemporary society whereby true experiences and feelings are supplanted by simulated ones. He declared that the most widely accepted notions of reality are actually mass-media produced illusions serving the cause of consumerism.
