Words have a way of telling the world how educated we really are, and wrong usage has a way of making even the best of us sound illiterate. Based on Associated Press, United Press International, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and the New York Times stylebooks, as well as writing guides such as "The Careful Writer" and "Words on Words," and Webster's New World College Dictionary, 4th Edition, the preferred dictionary used by U.S. news publications.
Marshall, marshal -- generally, the first form is correct only when the word is a proper noun: John Marshall. The second from is the verb form: Sue will marshal all her forces.
