May 17--More than 50 years ago, the Shevlin-Hixon mill on the west bank of the Deschutes River was wired for heavy industry.
Railroad tracks hauled raw logs from the woods west of town, while trucks roared through the front gates with finished lumber.
Millworkers lived in the neighborhoods to the north, mostly within walking distance of the hulking plant's yards.
Fast-forward to 2007, and the scene is completely different.
