San Diego has a good news/bad news complex about its attractiveness to business.
The good news: The region is a dynamic hub for founding small companies. The bad news: When these companies get big, they often move away or are bought out.
San Diego got a dramatic dose of that principle in 1986. USAir gobbled up locally based Pacific Southwest Airlines Inc. (PSA). And drug giant Eli Lilly & Co. bought Hybritech Inc., the first and biggest San Diego biotechnology firm.
