May 17--The advertising on Real Ice Cream's windows calls out like a street barker. Block letters ask passersby: "Have you tried our mouthwatering vada pav and falooda? If not, it's time."
It is, indeed.
This mom-and-pop ice cream parlor and Indian snack shack is hidden off El Camino Real in a down-at-the heels strip mall in Santa Clara. Pay no mind to the decor; it's the lovely exotic ice creams and the tongue-tingling chaat that are the draw.
Chaat is traditional Indian street food that includes salty, sweet, crunchy and fried treats. Most snacks are in the $3.50 to $4 range.
