ST. LOUIS _ When managing in the final year of his contract, Tony La Russa always has followed the same procedure. He waits until the end of the season, checks the temperature of his players and his bosses, and gets a strong sense of where he stands. If La Russa believes he's still wanted, he'll agree to a contract extension. But La Russa has said, many times, that he would walk if he didn't have the confidence of his players and team ownership.
