The Caucasus contains the three independent states of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, and in the north smaller republics within the Russian Federation. There are dozens of peoples, large and small, many with their own distinct languages, inhabiting this mountainous region bordering Russia, which also lies on the frontiers of the Middle East and Europe.
