BRITISH public life being a club- class affair, MPs were generous about John Prescott. The Deputy Prime Minister, filling in for Tony Blair at PMQs, made probably his last appearance at the Commons despatch box.

Laura Moffat (Lab, Crawley, majority of 37) said: 'He'll be missed.' William Hague: 'We wish him well.' Vince Cable for the LibDems thanked Mr Prescott 'genuinely for his contribution to British public life'.

Oh dear. I suppose it therefore falls to your sketchwriter to do the dirty work and to utter relief - joyful alleluias - the class-hating, adulterous, money-wasting, language-mauling old berk is on his way out.
