Closing up the cracks; Household hazardous waste programs across the U.S. are opening doors to small businesses.

In environmentally forward Portland, Ore., a growing number of small businesses are scheduling a smart and economical way to part with their hazardous waste.

More than 500 businesses a year call the regional government entity Metro about dropping off their hazardous waste, which ranges from laboratory chemicals to printing and photo chemicals to cleaners and pesticides.

Close to two-thirds of that waste is then recycled or recovered as an extension of one of the largest household hazardous waste programs in the country, which serves more than 50,000 households annually.
