Kazakhstan is planning to build a large gas-processing plant at the Karachaganak field operated jointly by BG and Eni to supply the domestic market with gas and reduce dependence on imported pipelined gas supplies from Russia. A similar plant is also planned for the Chevron-operated Tengiz field.
The $1.2 billion-$1.5 billion Karchaganak plant, which would process between 5 billion-7 billion cubic meters of sour gas into sweet gas, would be in addition to the project already agreed on between Astana and Moscow to expand an existing plant in Orenburg in Russia to process up to 15 Bcm/yr of Karachaganak gas (NC Feb.22,p1).
