UNCERTAINTY over stamp duty on house purchases is putting increasing pressure on the housing market, a leading bank said yesterday.
Irish Life & Permanent also blamed the continuing slowdown in the residential mortgage market on rising interest rates.
Chairperson of the bank Gillian Bowler called for a speedy resolution of the stamp duty issue.
She said a quick postelection change in stamp duty policy would lead to a recovery in new mortgage lending as the underlying level of demand remains strong.
