SUDDENLY, the breeze carried a heady aroma of ripe bananas toward me, and I knew Jan and Ron Eaton s' banana shrub was nearby.
The glossy green shrub greets visitors to the Eatons' Lake Shores home in Virginia Beach, and this time of year, a visitor couldn't miss its fragrant welcome.
The scent, which came and went in waves, was wafting from small creamy white buds, whose magenta edges looked hand painted. The flowers, not many of which were open that chilly day, are a magenta color that the artist appears to have mixed with creamy white paint.
