Safety glasses donned by weekend carpenters and others to protect their eyes from flying debris and other injuries may not perform as they are supposed to, researchers at the Illinois College of Optometry report in a small study.

Optometrists Janice M. McMahon and Stephen Beckerman tested 75 frames for safety glasses - three samples of 25 models - made by five manufacturers. All were fitted with polycarbonate lenses by an independent laboratory and tested to see if they withstood a high-velocity impact and other stresses.
