May 21--In Hurricane Katrina's wake, Southeast Texans sprang into action to help their neighbors to the east.
They contributed money and supplies to recovery efforts and hosted more than 1,500 at the Red Cross evacuation center at Ford Park. Hundreds more evacuees hunkered down at local hotels or churches and with friends and relatives.
It wasn't the first time Southeast Texas lent a hand to Louisianans in the face of a natural disaster.
About 80 years ago this month, Southeast Texas answered the call when melting snow, coupled with torrential rain, overwhelmed the Mississippi River levee system.
