May 21--Firefighters want to save homes, but they also want to live to fight another day. On Sunday, San Bernardino County firefighters went over basic tactics to increase their ability to fight -- and survive -- a fire in the wildlands.

"We're really preaching the basics this year," said Fire Captain Dave Burkart. "Every year, the danger gets larger, the brush gets bigger."

With drought conditions at a 130-year high, county fire chiefs are not taking any chances with their personnel, drumming the basics into teams from Devore, Fontana, Phelan, Oak Hills, Lucerne and Adelanto.
