NPD teams, backed by their marketing departments, have been trying to make yoghurt the comprehensive health food consumers have been searching for. Consumers are being enticed by the promise of Vitamin D, extra calcium, Omega-3, pre- and probiotic bacteria, all of which make yoghurt good for the gut, heart, skin and bones. Nestle claims its new Activ8 is even good for energy.

All this interest has translated into a healthy uplift in sales. The whole yoghurt and pot dessert market is up 4.7% year-on-year to 1.6bn [pounds sterling] [TNS, 52 w/e 28 January 2007]. Many expect growth to be even better this year.
