The scene is familiar to anyone who has attended a liturgy at a nursing home. Before Mass, a woman leads the crowd in practicing hymns. An African-American resident, who once may have prided herself on a fine voice and familiarity with hymns, attempts a solo of "Amazing Grace." She soon stumbles on the words, and puts her head in her hands.
Also in this scene is a dedicated group of young and middle-aged people who appear to be the residents' longtime friends. They escort residents into the spacious, tiled activity room of Cabrini Rehabilitation Center in Manhattan and sit with them, holding their hands and conversing.
