May 22--PEORIA -- Central Illinois farmers are paying more at the pump these days, like all area motorists.
But for farmers, there may be a bright side to rising fuel prices.
"While the higher the expenses, the lower the income still holds true, farmers that use the no-till method can cut fuel costs," said Patrick Kirchhofer, manager of the Peoria County Farm Bureau.
No-till farming means farmers don't turn over soil and leave plant residue in the field. It also means fewer trips through the field with heavy equipment, said Bob Frazee, University of Illinois Extension educator from his East Peoria office.
