Since the 1930s, when the existence of invisible "dark matter" was first postulated to explain gravitational effects observed in distant galaxies,astronomers have had little luck finding direct evidence of the mysterious stuff. Last week, however, astronomers announced that the Hubble telescope had captured the most compelling proof of its existence to date.
"This is the first time we have detected dark matter as having a unique structure that is different from the gas and galaxies in the cluster," said M. James Jee, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University, in a conference with reporters.
