The statistics are staggering. Rates of HIV infection in the United States have soared among women, particularly young women of color. Those of us currently working in reproductive justice can most likely rattle off facts to our colleagues and friends. "Black and Latina women account for 79 percent of all HIV infections among 13 to 19-year-old women" (CDC, 2006). We also cite them in our presentations: "Although Latinas comprise about 12 percent of young women between the ages of 13 to 24, they represent 19 percent of total AIDS cases among the female population in this age group" (Advocates for Youth, 2007). Fact sheets stating that "AIDS is the leading cause of death ...
