BANGKOK, Thailand, May 21, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- A group representing 150 community radio stations petitioned the military-appointed government of Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to challenge Bangkok's nationwide crackdown on radio stations over the weekend.
On Friday, the Thai government sanctioned security checks on some 3,000 community radio stations. The day before, it had shut down three community broadcasters.
The uproar generated by the closure of the three radio stations has shown that these broadcasters have a pivotal role to play in opening space in Thailand for media freedom.
