A zoom lens can produce different image sizes from the same camera position. As such a single zoom lens can replace two or three or more fixed focal length lenses. When the size, weight and cost are factors in selecting lenses this can be important, over and above the convenience of easier control of image size. Zoom lenses do cost more than a single fixed focal length lens but often not much more than two such lenses and now the zoom lenses are not much larger than the fixed focal length lenses. Many manufacturers now offer quite a variety of zoom lenses from wide angle to quite long focal lengths.
