SAN FRANCISCO _ Sunday's Super Bowl at Joe Robbie Stadium has set off a mini-Civil War in California. But while San Diego sizzles with anticipation, the Bay Area only simmers.
Charger fans are flat-out bonkers about the team they call the Bolts. They hanged the San Francisco quarterback in effigy 200 feet over a freeway and bathed a dozen skyscrapers in a glow of blue and gold.
In San Francisco, backers of the 20-point-favorite 49ers swagger with self-assurance. Championship T-shirts are already discounted here, and the downtown shows almost no sign of the big game.
