May 24--WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn said Wednesday he is trying to block legislation honoring environmental author Rachel Carson on her 100th birthday, linking her work against pesticides to the deaths of thousands of African babies.
"In my opinion she did more to kill more African children than anybody I know," the Oklahoma Republican said of the woman best known for writing "Silent Spring."
"I don't think we ought to be honoring the result of that effort."
Coburn said he is targeting a House-passed bill naming a post office in Springdale, Pa., Carson's hometown, in Carson's honor and an expected Senate ...
