Nationally, more than half of incarcerated males are fathers, affecting about 1.5 million children nationwide, according to the Center for Law and Social Policy in Washington, D.C. (1) The role that inmates play in the lives of their children is of critical importance. Fathers in prison overwhelmingly are fatherless themselves, (2) and many of their children will follow in their footsteps without successful intervention. Children with incarcerated parents are six to eight times more likely to commit crimes than children of nonincarcerated parents. (3)
