May 25--CARLSBAD ---- The Upper Deck Co. has pitched an offer to buy the Topps. Co., a deal that would unite two iconic sports memorabilia-makers.
Upper Deck and Topps would complement each other, bringing together an old legend in sports based on the East Coast with a relatively new company based in North County. But Topps said Thursday that it is cool to the idea, and investors seem doubtful.
Upper Deck, founded in 1988 and based in Carlsbad, brought high-tech innovation such as anti-forgery authentication into the once-staid industry. The privately held company is owned by Richard McWilliam, who also owns Jet Source, ...
