May 26--Although Jewish history in Mid-Missouri stretches back to the mid-1800s, it was only on Sunday that a shovel dug into Columbia's soil to begin the construction of a synagogue.
People from Congregation Beth Shalom, which means "house of peace" in Hebrew, gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony for a 3,500-square foot classroom building, which will be used for a religious school and possibly as a new sanctuary as well.
Congregation Beth Shalom, or CBS, purchased the last 6.9-acre lot of the old Godfrey farm at 500 W. Green Meadows Road in 2002 because it had outgrown its rented home at the Hillel Foundation for Jewish ...
