May 27--INDIANAPOLIS -- Early this afternoon, a large, round 72-year-old man will likely climb up in the stand overlooking the pit area at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and take on an active role in his 50th Indianapolis 500 race.
This is not the A.J. Foyt that first came here to race in 1958 and couldn't get into Gasoline Alley. The guys at the gate had never heard of him, so Foyt had to wait outside until his car arrived before he was allowed to step on this hallowed ground.
