In May Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first Black president of South Africa, capping a heroic struggle by the indigenous African masses for self-determination in their own homeland. The eyes of the world were riveted on South Africa, as that which was deemed virtually unthinkable a few short years ago became a reality. Millions of Black South Africans stood patiently in lines for hours, some having to leave and return on subsequent days, to cast the ballots that would destroy the hated apartheid system.
