The silence on the other end of the line said it all. It was time to come home.
It was a sweltering August of 2002, and I had just spent four cool days covering Worcester's Jesse Burkett All-Stars in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. The team played three games in that time, winning two. I wrote 12 stories, most by day, and spent the humid summer evenings sampling a local favorite known as Yuengling lager with photographer Rick Cinclair.
Burkett would play three more games, winning one on a walk-off homer by Ryan Griffin before falling in the U.S. final and the ensuing consolation game. I would watch those ...
