Abstract: Research has shown that individuals with disabilities have an increased likelihood of becoming victims of crime. As a result of a community needs assessment in rural southern Illinois, our organization designed a personal safety curriculum specifically for individuals with disabilities. Utilizing a team of multi-disciplinary professionals, we collaborated to develop a curriculum designed with the aforementioned problems in mind. This article outlines our experience using a team approach to curriculum development, challenges to this process, and recommendations for other professionals seeking to improve services in their community.
