"Feature recognition" is a CAD/CAM buzz-phrase. What's a "feature" and how is it "recognized?"
To understand features we have to understand how they are used.
Features are introduced as part of CAD modeling. It's shorthand for describing geometry applied during modeling: a pocket is a four-sided area removed from the base solid, a boss is a four-sided area added to the base solid. These are design features because they're used during design.
Manufacturers work with parts. They use the term "features" to describe a part; a pocket or a slot are features. These are manufacturing features because they're defined from a manufacturing viewpoint.
