NOVO HAMBURGO, BRAZIL (FNS) -- Faced with a deluge of Far East low-end imports and an unfavorable exchange rate, many Brazilian footwear makers are turning to the better shoe market and technology investments to survive.
Meanwhile, the Association of Brazilian Shoe Exporters (ABAEX), its members devastated by the recent exchange rate between the Brazilian real and the American dollar, is appealing to the Brazilian government for relief, which, apparently, is not forthcoming. Auri Schneider, president of ABAEX, reported, "They have made it very clear to us that nothing will be done. We have to find our private ways to get out of this situation."
