May 29--LOWELL -- Armed with a degree in philosophy and with the Vietnam War at full tilt, Joe Burke was in the Air Force working as a chaplain's assistant and wondering which direction life would take him.
Stationed in South Carolina, Burke was taking more college courses when his sociology professor convinced him to try a particular career path -- counseling troubled children.
"I found it fascinating," Burke said. "If you worked with these kids, you could see such a change in their attitude."
