May 30--Last month, at a time of sharpened fear among illegal immigrants of mass sweeps by federal agents, a delegation of African-American public officials and civil rights leaders traveled to the Mexican border for a firsthand look.
"What I witnessed can only be described as an obscenity of injustice," said San Pablo City Councilman Leonard McNeil, one of five Bay Area participants.
The trip was co-sponsored by the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, CoaliciA[micro]n de Derechos Humanos and the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
