May 30--Engineers have a new plan to tame high-pressure steam being piped to Mayo Clinic, using new equipment being installed within the next few weeks.
The underground line, through which Mayo taps into steam generated at Silver Lake power plant, either has been out of service or leaking for more than a year.
Engineers hired by plant operator Rochester Public Utilities are focusing on expansion joints in 10 underground vaults, which prevent damage to the line from the extreme high pressure and temperature of the steam.
