May 31--Nearly weekly, Deborah Hirsch of La Crosse calls friends down South with what she calls an "ain't it great to live in Wisconsin" story. Many of the stories feature her bicycle in a starring role.
The Georgia native gave her car to charity in 2003 and has gotten around almost exclusively on two wheels, or two feet, ever since. Biking in La Crosse, she said, "is almost like paradise to me."
Today, The League of American Bicyclists will designate La Crosse as a Bicycle Friendly Community, one of just 64 to earn the distinction nationally since the program began in 2003. At least 161 communities applied.
