TWO recent European car models demonstrate technology developed with Lanxess to save weight and improve safety.

The new Audi TT is the first car to have a front end made with a plastic-aluminium composite structure, reducing weight by 15 per cent over an equivalent steel-based hybrid: steel has always hitherto been the metal component in hybrid front ends.

The structural component consists of three sheets of aluminium that are over-moulded with glass fibre-reinforced Durethan BKV 30 nylon 6, a material already well-established in hybrid technology.
