Sharp rise in personal loans, says RBI

Mumbai, May 31 (PTI) There has been a sharp rise in grant of personal loans by banks with housing emerging as the biggest contributory factor, according to a Reserve Bank report.

The share of personal loans in total bank credit increased from 9.4 per cent as of March 1990 to 14.4 per cent in 2000 to 22.5 per cent to March 2005 and to 25.2 per cent as of March 2006, said the report on Currency and Finance 2005-06 released here today.

The rise in personal loans was attributable to freedom given to banks to decide the quantum, rate of interest, margin requirement and repayment period.
