Jun. 1--The clock is ticking on the amateur boxing career of 19-year-old David De La Cruz as he prepares for the weeklong U.S. Championships, which begin Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
De La Cruz's dream is to win gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
To keep hopes alive, he must finish among the top eight in the 141-pound weight class. That would allow him to make the next step, to the U.S. Olympic Trials in August.
De La Cruz, a 2006 South Grand Prairie graduate, has put college and desires of a pro boxing career on hold to take this run at the Olympics.
