The recast Energy Star programme is nearing final approval ahead of a vote in the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) on 7 June and plenary in July. Some 5% of EU electricity consumption is affected as Energy Star includes material such as computers, copiers, printers and monitors. The European Commission, which signed a second five-year agreement with the US in December 2006, estimates around 30 TWh of electricity, equivalent to the electricity demand in Hungary, could be saved in the EU in the next three years.
