Jun. 1--If I could interrupt the cheering and back-slapping over Hewlett-Packard's sale of its breathtaking employee retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains, I'd like to say something.
The deal was a mistake.
Maybe not for all of us who might be able to traipse through the 534-acre Little Basin preserve in two years or five years or in however many years it takes to transform the land into a state park.
The deal was a mistake for Hewlett-Packard. Unloading the property, which for 44 years provided respite, retreat and sanctuary for harried HPers, was like hocking grandma's china when you didn't need the money.
