Now that cable operators have begun to embrace Spanish-language channels such as Galavision, MTV Latino and Gems as an important way to serve the growing Hispanic market, niche channels targeting Asians and other ethnic groups are also emerging.

The International Channel, which merged with Tele-Communications Inc.'s Encore Media Corp. last May, already offers a variety of ethnic programming to 5.6 million subscribers. Now, several companies -- including the Encore/International Channel joint venture -- believe many different ethnic populations have the viewing passion and buying power to support separate 24-hour channels dedicated to each group.
