Growing up in East Jerusalem, the Arab sector of the partitioned city, Sari Nusseibeh was fascinated by the No Man's Land that separated him from the Hasidic Jews of Mea Shearim in West Jerusalem. A patch of earth, desolate but with a grapevine, connecting both sides in their separation, posing a potential threat to both sides.
Mr. Nusseibeh, as we get to know the educator and philosopher in his memoir, Once Upon A Country, seems to personify the No Man's Land of the free thinker.
