UK-based Barclays PLC says that it does not plan to sell any of ABN AMRO's major assets as part of its buyout proposal, countering a Dutch newspaper report today that said Barclays might sell Banco Real, ABN AMRO's Brazilian unit. "Barclays is not engaged in or pursuing discussions relating to major asset sales in connection with its recommended merger with ABN AMRO," Barclays CEO John Varley said in a statement provided to CardLine. A Barclays spokesperson adds that ABN AMRO is a "very complimentary fit with Barclays' businesses. There are markets they are particularly strong in that we are weak in and vice versa."
