SAN DIEGO -- Burn patients who demonstrate symptoms of acute stress disorder during hospitalization are more likely to report chronic pain and impaired psychosocial functioning during the first year of recovery than those who do not, Gina Magyar-Russell, Ph.D., reported at the annual meeting of the American Burn Association.
"A diagnosis of acute stress disorder may aid us in identifying people at risk for continued health problems, in particular pain and symptoms of continued mental distress," said Dr. Magyar-Russell, of the Johns Hopkins Burn Center in Baltimore.
